Designing the Razer Raiju

The controller built for champions takes more than cutting-edge technology and high-grade materials. It also requires unmatched ergonomics and validation by the world’s top esports athletes. These are the building blocks that go into every one of our products, fuelled by the spirit of collaboration between engineers, scientists, designers and gamers, and driven by an intense process in the pursuit of perfection. This is the Razer design methodology. And this is how we built the Razer Raiju.

FROM DREAM TO DRAFT

When we were chosen to create one of the very first 3rd party controllers for the PS4, the mission was simple: to create the ultimate controller, able to outperform the competition even in the world's toughest tournaments. Our engineering teams quickly drafted plans, tapping into our long heritage of designing controllers and years of experience in developing high precision and low latency components for PC gaming peripherals. Every detail was considered and specified for the esports athlete; from the ability to adjust your mic volume in the Quick Control Panel, right down to the exact feel of the Hyperesponse buttons—each finely-tuned to produce that satisfying tap and spring-back for fast, accurate feedback.

PERFECTING ERGONOMICS

A controller doesn't just have to feel great in your hands; your hands should feel great after hours of gaming. Our ergonomics team took one of our most popular forms and custom-tuned it for the new PS4 hardware while refining it to ensure the weight is light enough for hours of practice. And every button is optimally placed so you don’t over-reach or strain. The result is ergonomics so comfortable, the controller just disappears and feels like an extension of your body. To eliminate awkward playstyles like ‘the claw’, the Razer Raiju features four additional fully-customizable triggers and bumpers—right in easy reach—to give you insane accuracy when moving and aiming at the same time.

SELECTING HIGH-GRADE COMPONENTS

The difference between a cheap controller and a premium one can be felt as soon as you pick it up. There’s no bending or twisting, and the buttons and triggers all snap back with precise crispness. Every component was carefully picked—with only the best materials used—to strike a balance between weight and performance. From the sturdy high-impact, durable plastic shell to the reinforced hardware, to the precision sticks that don’t wobble. Even the textured non-slip grip was engineered to combat sweaty palms, and the high-quality braided cable chosen for extended durability and uninterrupted tournament play.

VALIDATED BY ESPORTS ATHLETES

The process is only half way done until our Team Razer esports athletes finally get their hands on the prototypes. They test them across a range of games and playstyles, putting them through hundreds of hours of practice—and sometimes even in real tournaments. This validation process can sometimes take months to complete, but the real-world feedback that we get from these esports athletes is the key to perfection. With their insights, we refine the prototypes and reiterate again and again, until we produce a flawless controller that we can stand by. This is the Razer Raiju, truly designed for esports.
